You were in a car accident in New Jersey. You are in pain. And you have no idea how to pay for treatment. Good news: your auto insurance already covers it. Every NJ auto policy includes PIP (Personal Injury Protection) that pays for chiropractic, physical therapy, and acupuncture after an accident. Here is how it works.

What Is PIP Insurance?

PIP (Personal Injury Protection) is mandatory in New Jersey. Every auto insurance policy includes it. PIP pays for your medical treatment after a car accident, regardless of who caused the accident. It is no-fault coverage, meaning your own auto insurance pays whether the accident was your fault, the other driver's fault, or unclear.

Standard NJ PIP covers up to $250,000 in medical expenses per accident. Some drivers selected lower limits ($15,000, $50,000, or $75,000) when they purchased their policy. Check your declarations page or call your auto insurer to confirm your limit.

What PIP Covers

  • Chiropractic adjustments and spinal decompression
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises
  • Acupuncture
  • X-rays and diagnostic imaging
  • Emergency room visits
  • Prescription medications
  • Surgical procedures (if necessary)
  • Medical equipment (braces, supports)

The key requirement: treatment must be medically necessary and related to the accident. We document everything thoroughly so your claims are never denied for lack of documentation.

What PIP Does NOT Cover

  • Pre-existing conditions unrelated to the accident
  • Treatment that is not medically necessary
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • Massage therapy (in most cases)

Important: if you had a pre-existing condition that the accident made worse, PIP does cover the treatment for the worsening. This is called an "aggravation of a pre-existing condition" and is fully covered.

Your Rights Under NJ PIP

You have more rights than you probably realize:

  • Choose your own doctor. The insurance company cannot force you to see their preferred provider. You have the right to choose a chiropractor, physical therapist, or any licensed healthcare provider.
  • No copay or deductible. Standard PIP has no copay and no deductible for medical treatment. Some policies with reduced premiums may have a medical expense deductible ($250, $500, or $1,000).
  • Treatment as long as medically necessary. There is no arbitrary visit limit. As long as your provider documents ongoing medical necessity, PIP continues to pay.
  • Wage loss benefits. PIP also covers lost wages if your injuries prevent you from working (subject to policy limits and waiting periods).

How to Use PIP at Pain Center of Morris

The process is simple:

  1. Call us at (908) 469-4070. Tell us you were in a car accident
  2. Bring your auto insurance card and the police report number
  3. We verify your PIP coverage and begin treatment the same day in most cases
  4. We bill your PIP directly. You pay nothing out of pocket for covered treatment
  5. We handle all documentation, progress reports, and communication with your insurer

Common Mistakes After a Car Accident

  • Waiting too long to start treatment. Insurance companies use treatment gaps to argue your injuries are not serious. Start within 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Missing appointments. Gaps in treatment weaken your claim. Keep your appointments consistent.
  • Not getting a police report. Even for minor accidents, a police report creates an official record that supports your PIP claim.
  • Giving recorded statements without legal advice. If the other driver's insurance calls, you are not required to give a recorded statement. Consider consulting a personal injury attorney first.
  • Using health insurance instead of PIP. Your health insurance has copays, deductibles, and may try to recover costs from your auto insurance later. Use PIP first. That is what it is for.
