If you have never been to a chiropractor, you probably have questions. Will it hurt? Will they crack my back? How long does it take? Here is exactly what happens at your first visit at Pain Center of Morris so there are no surprises.

Before You Arrive

Insurance verification. Call us before your visit and we will verify your coverage for free. We accept most major insurance plans including Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, United Healthcare, Horizon, Medicare, workers' comp, and auto accident PIP. Knowing your coverage before you walk in means no billing surprises.

What to bring. Your insurance card, a photo ID, and any relevant medical records or imaging (MRI, X-ray) if you have them. If you were in a car accident, bring your auto insurance information and the police report number.

Step 1: Intake and History (10 to 15 Minutes)

You will fill out a health history form covering your current symptoms, past injuries, medical conditions, and medications. Then you sit down with Dr. Monica Gonzalez for a conversation. She wants to know: Where does it hurt? When did it start? What makes it better or worse? What have you already tried? How is this affecting your daily life?

This is not a formality. The history drives the exam. A patient with gradual onset neck pain gets a different workup than someone who was rear-ended last week.

Step 2: Physical Examination (15 to 20 Minutes)

Dr. Gonzalez examines the area of complaint and related regions. A typical exam includes:

  • Posture analysis. Standing posture reveals spinal curvatures, imbalances, and compensation patterns
  • Range of motion testing. How far can you move? Where does it catch or hurt?
  • Orthopedic tests. Specific maneuvers that identify disc involvement, nerve compression, ligament damage, or joint dysfunction
  • Neurological screening. Reflexes, muscle strength, and sensation in your arms or legs to check for nerve involvement
  • Palpation. Hands-on examination of each vertebra and surrounding muscles to find areas of restriction, tenderness, or misalignment

Step 3: X-Rays (If Needed, 5 Minutes)

Not every patient needs X-rays. But when they are indicated (trauma, suspected structural problems, chronic conditions, patients over 65), we take them in the office with results available immediately. No referral to an imaging center. No waiting days for a report.

Step 4: Diagnosis and Treatment Plan (5 to 10 Minutes)

This is the part most first-time patients appreciate the most. Dr. Gonzalez explains exactly what she found: what is causing your pain, how severe it is, and what the treatment plan looks like. She gives you a specific number of visits, a realistic timeline, and what results to expect at each stage. No vague promises. No indefinite treatment plans.

Step 5: Your First Treatment (10 to 15 Minutes)

Most patients receive their first adjustment at the first visit. If your condition requires a gentler approach, we start with soft-tissue therapy or instrument-assisted techniques. You should feel some relief after the first treatment, though lasting improvement typically builds over a series of visits.

After treatment, we schedule your next visit, provide any home care instructions (stretches, ice or heat, posture tips), and answer any remaining questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients feel pressure and sometimes a popping sound, but not pain. The popping is just gas releasing from the joint (the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles). If you are nervous about manual adjustments, we have instrument-assisted techniques that are equally effective and very gentle.
